Tourism Innovation Competition 2014

Description: Tourism Innovation Competition (TIC) was held from 10 June to 17 June 2014. It was organised by Temasek Polytechnic School of Business and supported by the Singapore Tourism Board. The aim of the competition was to arm student participants with opportunities to learn more about the tourism industry as well as career opportunities available in this field. This year's theme was "Sustainability and the hotel sector". There were close to 150 student participants from various Secondary Schools and the ITE who presented creative proposals reinforcing and reinventing sustainable approaches to hospitality operations, specifically in the hotel sector. The winner was Team Captivators from Zhonghua Secondary School.

Description: Temasek Polytechnic organised the Tourism Innovation Competition 2012 for 205 students from 23 Secondary Schools and ITE Colleges. It was held from 15 to 22 June 2012. A total of 47 teams attempted to provide innovative solutions to accessibility problems for the special needs visitor in Sentosa. The special needs visitor profile included the disabled, elderly, families with young children, nursing mothers, and pregnant women. Consultation was held with TP's Hospitality & Tourism Management (HTM) / Leisure Resort Management (LRM) lecturers as well as staff from Singapore Tourism Board and Sentosa Development Corporation to fine-tune proposals on their assigned areas. The participants set up 47 on-site displays for the judges to view. The top 3 teams presented their proposals to the judges and their peers on 22 June 2012. Teo Wei Xuan, Cedar Girls Secondary School and Florentino Gem Paula Villar, from Yishun Town Secondary School gave comments on their proposals.

Press release. 15 Sept. 2015. TP student tops Culinary Challenge which wins him '10 Michelin Stars' trip to Europe

Description: Temasek Polytechnic (TP) Culinary & Catering Management senior, Mr Poh Zhe Kai, emerged champion after beating 14 other top local culinary students across 7 institutions in the prestigious Les Amis Awards 2015 Challenge. Andre Chiang (Restaurant Andre), Joshua Brown (CUT by Wolfgang Puck), and Willin Low (Wild Rocket Restaurant) were among the panel of 12 esteemed chef judges assembled by Les Amis. Zhe Kai took home the $3,000 cash prize, as well as an all-expenses paid '10 Michelin Stars' trip to Europe. Besides that, he also had the invaluable opportunity to meet the chef-owners behind revered kitchens such as Le Petit Nice and Troisgros.

Press release. 22 Oct. 2012. 60 students from 6 secondary schools turn cyber warriors and investigators for a day to solve cyber crimes!

Description: Temasek Polytechnic's School of Informatics and IT organised the 1st Cyber Warriors and Investigators Competition on Wednesday, 24 Oct. 2012. Sixty secondary 3 students from Bedok Green, Bedok View, Junyuan, Ngee Ann, Ping Yi and Springfield Secondary Schools took part in a 3-hour long competition and learned how to use digital forensics to solve cyber crimes. The aim of the competition was to give secondary school students an idea of what they would learn in courses such as the Diploma in Cyber & Digital Security and Diploma in Digital Forensics offered in TP.

Press release. 15 Aug. 2016. Temasek Polytechnic and Philips Lighting to launch first connected lighting test bed in a tertiary institution in Singapore

Description: Temasek Polytechnic (TP) collaborated with Philips Lighting to launch the first connected lighting test bed on campus. The collaboration empowered TP students, under the guidance of lecturers and Philips' engineers, to create connected lighting solutions for the campus, and develop innovative ideas in the application of smart lighting. The collaboration kicked off with a competition for TP students titled, "Light beyond illumination: the smart campus edition". The competition ran from 15 August to 31 October 2016, and the brief was for students to innovate smart lighting applications to drive greater energy efficiencies and to improve the campus learning experience. Philips Lighting invested S$100,000 to enable the top two winning ideas to be implemented on a test bed on campus. Mr Peter Lam, Principal & CEO, Temasek Polytechnic and Mr. Wee Shiang Ning, General Manager of Philips Lighting Singapore shared their comments on the collaboration.

Description: More than 70 first-year students from Temasek Polytechnic (TP) School of Design Digital Film & Television course had the invaluable opportunity of working alongside Emeritus Senior Minister (ESM), Mr Goh Chok Tong, to produce a series of short films in celebration of 40 years of Marine Parade memories. The result, produced in a mere four months, was a collection of stories that brought to life the colourful memories of the people who grew up in Marine Parade - the MParaders. These stories of love, pain, friendship, camaraderie, second-chances and perseverance also showcased the many different aspects of Singapore's history, beautiful architecture, multi-ethnicity and kampong spirit, which would resonate with many Singaporeans. An under-the-stars picnic premiere of "Our stories, our home: 40 years of Marine Parade" was held on Saturday, 12 March 2016 at 7.45pm at Block 50A Marine Terrace with Emeritus Senior Minister (ESM) Goh Chok Tong as the guest-of-honour. Prizes were awarded for best film, direction, cinematography, script and editing. Generous funding for the partnership came from the Lee Foundation and Marine Parade CCC.

The many faces of Singapore: Singapore tourism competition for schools 2001

Description: The "Many Faces of Singapore" competition, opened to all secondary schools, was held to expore ways to promote Singapore as an ideal tourist destination. It was organised by the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Singapore Chapter together with the Temasek Business School. Student teams were required to submit a 2,000 word report on their ideas to promote Singapore as a tourist destination. On 25 May 2001, the shortlisted teams set up exhibition booths in Temasek Polytechnic to present their ideas in a multi-sensory environment.

The journey of TP Eco Flash team

The team designed and built a vehicle that ran on clean energy. Press release. 08 Nov. 2017. TP students adapt Philip's lighting technology to develop first-of-its-kind smart solutions

Description: From a poly-wide student competition entitled "Light beyond illumination: the smart campus edition", resulting from a partnership between Temasek Polytechnic and Philips Lighting, two teams of students from Temasek Polytechnic's Diploma in Integrated Facility Management and the Diploma in Infocomm & Network Engineering emerged as winners with their projects entitled "MINESpace" and "Occupants' Comfort". The top two teams were rewarded with a trip to the Philips' headquarters in Amsterdam, and upon their return, were mentored by experts from Philips Lighting to further develop their ideas into reality. "MINESpace", a system that combined a mobile app with the smart lights installed in two blocks of student apartments at the polytechnic enabled the entire process of nightly roll calls, inventory checking and fault reporting to be automated -- a first for any boarding school or hostel in Singapore. The 2nd project "Occupants' Comfort" made use of smart lights (called Power Over Ethernet, or PoE) to enhance the visual and thermal comfort of a classroom. WOW shopping experience : inaugural National Retailing Competition 2013

Description: The inaugural National Retailing Competition 2013 which served as both a competition and exhibition, was organised by the Temasek Polytechnic School of Business Diploma in Retail Management. Having started in June 2013 and culminating with an exhibition in September, the competition saw individuals from secondary schools and ITEs pit their retail ideas against each other. Finalists were eventually shortlisted and invited to put up exhibits at the WOW shopping experience. The competition had a two fold objective, which was aimed at raising awareness about the retail industry whilst tapping into and attracting bright young minds to the retail industry. The competition also aimed to be enriching for its participants. Participants were required to attend an informative mini workshop which had industry professionals giving various talks. Through these workshops, students learnt the other facets of the retail industry such as branding and the importance of local and overseas fashion trends. Participants also toured 1st Avenue, TP's on-campus retail training store run by Year 2 students from the Diploma in Retail Management.

Tourism Innovation Competition 2013

Description: Tourism Innovation Competition (TIC) is an annual competition that started in 2010. Organised by Temasek Polytechnic's School of Business and supported by the Singapore Tourism Board, the competition aims to arm student participants with opportunities to learn more about the tourism industry as well as career opportunities available. The theme for 2013 looked at the youth tourism market, and how Singapore could be made into a major youth tourism destination. Some 49 teams of students from 26 secondary schools and ITE participated in TIC 2013, and the teams were given one month to work on their proposals and were mentored by industry experts. The grand finale for the competition was held on 16 July, and students had to present their creative strategies which would produce innovative experiences for younger tourists aged 18 to 35 years old, while the Auditorium foyer was turned into an exciting exhibition of novel tourism ideas. Four students from Zhonghua Secondary School won the competition with their Cosplay theme where guests could try their hands at bringing characters they were playing to life. Mr Daniel Yeow, Director, TP's School of Business gave the welcome address, while Ms Chiew Chien Way, Asst Director, Capability and Innovation, Singapore Tourism Board presented the awards to winners of TIC 2013.

Description: Temasek Polytechnic (TP) students from the School of Design together with People's Association, DBS Bank and Bloomberg competed in a "live" installation showcase of innovative, purposeful and sustainable solutions to benefit the community. Called the Collaborative Design Challenge @ ARCHIFEST 2016, the show was held on Friday, 30 September 2016, between 12 noon-1.30pm at Pavilion@Raffles Place Park, Raffles Place. Students from TP's Diploma in Interior Architecture & Design have over the past four weeks, formed teams with end users, designers and manufacturers to identify a need or problem, then design and build a functional installation that added value to people's lives using only recycled materials. Among the challenge projects showcased were: "Giving" tree -- made from recycled material, the tree could be easily replicated and set up in community centres where members of the public could pen down their gift of kindness ; Trolley to help the elderly cardboard collectors; DIY solution to tackle discomfort in the workplace. The challenge concluded with a 30-minute assemblage of the pre-fabricated design elements on site at ARCHIFEST 2016.

Description: Temasek Polytechnic, in collaboration with A*STAR's Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R), Microsoft and MediaTek, organised an "Internet of Things (IoT) Hackathon" to focus on preparing future working adults in the growth area of IoT. The Hackathon took place at Temasek Polytechnic's School of Informatics & IT on 26 & 27 November 2015. Approximately 50 TP students participated in this event to develop prototype IoT solutions within two days, using the Microsoft Azure IoT Open Source Platform, MediaTek LinkIt One platform, together with Engineering System expertise provided by I2R. It was jointly organised by the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Singapore Chapter and Temasek Polytechnic with support from Singapore Tourism Board. The competition was opened to all secondary schools and students were encouraged to explore unique ideas based on local heritage, history, beliefs, or the arts to draw tourist to Singapore. Alice-in-Action Challenge 2010

Description: The National Infocomm Competition (NIC) is a series of infocomm-themed competitions to expose students to areas such as robotics, artificial intelligence, data science and mobile application development. A total of 3,000 students from secondary schools, junior colleges, ITE and polytechnics took part in 15 challenges within the NIC in 2010. One of the themed challenges was titled "Alice-in-Action" and was organised by Temasek Polytechnic School of Informatics & IT on 4 November 2010 for secondary schools. For the 2010 challenge, Bedok View Secondary School, Hwa Chong Institution, Nan Hua High, Bowen Secondary, Raffles Institution were among some of the participating schools. Description: Tourism Innovation Competition (TIC) 2016 was organised by Temasek Polytechnic (TP) School of Business (Hospitality & Tourism Management, and Leisure & Event Management divisions) and supported by the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Singapore Chapter. TIC's brief came from TP's long-standing industry partner, Singapore Zoo, which was looking to increase visitorship of young adults aged 13-21 years old through the implementation of programmes, activities, events and marketing initiatives. Some 30 teams of students from 15 secondary schools and the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) presented their creative proposals at the Tourism Innovation Competition (TIC) and the presentation of the award winners took place on Friday, 3 June, 2016 at the Event Hall, Temasek Tourism Academy, Temasek Polytechnic.

Description: Tourism Innovation Competition (TIC) is an annual competition that started in 2010. Organised by Temasek Polytechnic's School of Business and supported by the Singapore Tourism Board, the competition aims to arm student participants with opportunities to learn more about the tourism industry as well as career opportunities available. Now in its third year, TIC 2012 was held from 15 June to 22 June. The theme for 2012 was "Sentosa visitor experience: a destination that is accessible to visitors with special needs". Participants had to come up with innovative solutions to provide better accessibility for special needs visitors in Sentosa. Mr Daniel Yeow, Director, TP School of Business gave the welcome address, while guest speakers included Ms Lilian Kuan, Asst Director, Sector Capability Development, Singapore Tourism Board and Ms Lim Suu Kuan, Divisional Director, Guest Experience Division, Sentosa Development Coroporation. Lecturers from the Hospitality & Tourism Management (HTM)/Leisure & Resort Management (LRM) diploma courses gave detailed briefing of the theme & competition to participants. More than 201 students from 23 secondary schools and the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) attended 2 workshops 'Special needs and creativity' and 'Walkabouts in Sentosa' to deepen their understanding of tourism and special needs problems. The 47 competing teams had to go through a series of consultations with industry experts to fine-tune their proposals before making their presentation to the judges. The champion of TIC 2012 was the Zest team from Zhonghua Secondary School.
